Release Complacency
Webster defines complacency as, "self satisfaction especially when accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies."
How does this relate to health and fitness? Understanding that complacency can be dangerous, think of how many people neglect their bodies. These people may be in our families. We may know them at work. This person may even be you. I picture the uncle who never exercises, eats fast food burgers daily, and jokes about his beer belly. This type of complacency is undeniably dangerous. The man is overweight, eats unhealthy, and refuses to move his body, yet he isn't fully aware of how dangerous this complacency is. He isn't fully aware of the ama in his body, the cholesterol that is built up in his arteries, or how his behavior is slowly killing him.
This man, like many of us, has fallen into a comfort zone of complacency. In order for him to get healthy, he would need to change his behavior, perhaps seek help from a health coach. This requires him to do things that he has most likely never done before.
Or...complacency can come in the form of the mom who is overworked, stressed out, and never puts herself first. As she goes about her day, checking off task after task, she is unaware of the damage that this constant state of stress is slowly causing her body. She has also fallen into a state of comfort, where she has lived this way for so long, that she is secretly afraid of anything that is different.
Neale Donald Walsch said that, "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone."
Sometimes we get trapped in the patterns of our lives, and we get so comfortable, that we don't realize how damaging it can be. We don't notice when our health begins to deteriorate.
It is important to give ourselves time to be still. This is how we begin to hear what our body needs. Once we learn to hear our body, then we get in touch with the mind and spirit. When we live in a comfort zone of non stop motion, we are unable to connect with who we are, and fail to realize what we really want out of life.
Health is often seen as just the physical. I take a holistic approach to health, which encompasses the mind, body, and spirit. All three need to be in connection with one another for us to fully engage in the human experience. I want to continue to always better myself. The more whole I am, the better I can serve my kids, my family, my clients, friends, and the world in general. I truly believe that the healthier and happier I am, the more I have to give of myself to the world, which is so desperately in need of love, patience, and compassion.
How do we begin to defeat complacency?
First gift yourself time to be with yourself.
Ask yourself, "What parts of my life need attention?" "Where are things out of balance?"
I like to do this in seated meditation. I schedule time for meditation every morning. It is a non negotiable part of my morning routine. My son is able to find his mental stillness while on a long run in the woods. His routine consists of him waking at 4 in the morning, while it is still dark outside, putting on his running shoes, and running. He says that the dark provides the stillness and connection to nature that puts him in touch with his mind and spirit. Time for stillness, can look however you want it to look. It doesn't have to be a one size fits all approach. Do what feels right for you.
Imagine doing what you desire.
What does this vision look like?
Determine the steps that are required to get you there.
Then...this is the part where most of us get stuck. This is the scary part where many of us get complacent, because it is easier to stay in the bubble of comfort that we've always known, then it is to take ACTION. Implement the plan. Take the steps that are required to get you the body and life that you want.
Follow through with the actions that are going to get you where you want to be.
And lastly, don't be afraid.
I know that stepping out of your comfort zone is scary. It feels like a risk. The unfamiliar can be paralyzing, but this is where the growth happens. The world, especially right now, needs us all to do a little bit more, be a little bit better, and to reach a little bit farther. The only way that this can be accomplished is if we release our complacency.
I hope that these words inspired you.
