Establishing of a morning routine

Ever heard the saying 'If you win the morning, you win the day'

We are hearing more and more about the importance of a morning routine. There is good reason for this. It sets the intention for the day. I personally find that I am more grounded, focused, and positive when I make time for my morning routine. Below are 5 things that I try to get in before I start my day. I don't beat myself up if I don't get a chance to get them all in. Life is busy, and we have to stay flexible in order to enjoy life. If I can get in at least 3 of the 5 things below on average, I definitely feel better as I go about my day.

1. Make your bed

I have to admit that this one was hard for me. It wasn't until I read the book, Make Your Bed, by William H. McRaven, a navy seal, that I realized the importance of starting each day by making my bed. As he says in the book, "It starts your day with a task completed." This really resonated with me. I love to made "to do" lists and check them off as I go about my day. It makes me feel accomplished. I'm always in a rush to skip the mundane tasks and move onto the more exciting things. Making my bed first thing in the morning forces me to slow down and remember that oftentimes the mundane tasks are the foundation of the discipline needed in order to propel us towards success.

2. Meditate

Regular meditation provides a number of different benefits ranging from decreasing anxiety and stress to improving focus. There are many different forms of meditation. It helps me keep my head clear, so that I can better listen to my inner voice. Staying in touch with my intuition helps me make better decisions. It also helps me stay focused and on task. I love to use an app called Insight Timer. It has hundreds of free meditations that anyone can use. Definitely download and give it a try.

3. Move

Researchers at the University of Bristol found that people who exercise during the workday have more energy and a more positive outlook, which are both critical to getting things done,” he says. “Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. This doesn't have to be anything super intense or crazy. Any type of soft movement will give you all of the benefits stated in this paragraph. 4. Drink Tea

I try to drink warm lemon water every morning. It helps to balance the acidity levels in the body, and it helps stimulate digestion. Sometimes, when I'm out of lemons or if I'm in the mood for something different, I'll mix in turmeric, ginger, and green teas. Turmeric teas are a great anti-inflammatory that helps prevent cancer, whereas ginger tea is often used to soothe the stomach, relieve sore muscles, and ease painful periods. Include some green tea and you've now created a drink loaded with antioxidants that can reduce damage to your body on a cellular level.

5. Journal

The final part of my morning routine involves journaling. Keeping a gratitude journal that I write in every morning helps me remember that life is always good, and there is more to be thankful for than there is to complain about. It also gives me a chance to set an intention for the day. It allows me to identify my achievements as well as all the blessings in life.Once I start to write them down, and can see them in front of me on a piece of paper, it really puts into perspective the important things in life. Plus it makes me a happier, more contented person. After writing in my gratitude journal, I can go about my day with a clear and positive mind. By taking time every morning to write my thoughts down, I start your day on a more positive note.
